![]() I rather dislike Elgato as a brand but either Elgato Camlink or EVGA XR1 Lite. Just remember, you cab always turn your resolution DOWN, but you cant go above the maximum 4k60fps is the current gold standard, but if youre looking for cheaper cards and using consoles that dont hit that level anyways you can easily save a few bucks by buying an older card made for 1440 or 1080. One limit for how much they can output (which determines the resolution and framerate of your stream), and one limit for how much they can pass through (which determines the resolution and framerate that you actually see on your monitor). ![]() Video compatibility - capture cards have two limits to how they handle video. Thankfully this is pretty easy now that HDMI is the standard, but you might need to pay more attention if you want to hook up your ps2 or something But if you stream from a laptop or dont trust yourself to open up your computer, external is your only optionĬonnectivity - make sure that whatever card you get can accept the inputs you want to use. External ones usually do more of their own processing while internal ones can offload that onto your system, but the wire can limit how well they perform and in my experience they are less reliable. ![]() Internal cards are more like adding a new piece to your computer (if youre familiar with building PCs, its a PCIe component). I see a lot of good recs, so let me throw out some more general info to keep an eye out forĮxternal vs internal cards - an external card sits on your desk and communicates with your cputer over a cord. They've since stripped those out while cleaning up the codebase, and you'll regularly see a new streamer who got suckered into buying one for $40 'on an amazing sale' who can't get it to work for some reason, on the Support forums. OBS used to have custom handlers JUST to play nice with Hauppage capture cards' insanity. Oh hey, it's a signal! Yes, I absolutely recognize that! Oh wait, no, no idea what you're talking about'. You're feeding me alien garbage and always have been. Playing along and suddenly 'No signal! Never heard of it. They don't comply with the UVC spec (so don't just show up as a webcam, you pretty much HAVE to use their software), tend to have HUGE amounts of capture latency (as they're designed primarily to be 'PC TV tuner' cards, where delay isn't an issue), and are even more finicky than the old BlackMagic cards that would crash if you didn't wave the chicken over them JUST right. Thanks to /u/iTruthful and Conceptional for the art!
